Why is Giving Better than Receiving?

Our staff created a 5K Fun Run after brainstorming ways to inspire hope, create community connectivity, and also get people moving.  We wanted to benefit those that live in our area.  We found our cause in the “5K Run For Their Fun” event.

The Opie Coxie Memorial Foundation was the perfect charity to donate event proceeds.  They have a consistent track record in assisting young athletes that strive to play sports for the local area. I know this personally… as many of our athletes over the years have used their funds to help pay for club jerseys, equipment, entry fees or travel costs.  Opie Coxie is committed to giving every child an opportunity to participate in athletics.

With this being the inaugural year, and a unique one at that, I was hopeful we would have some participation and people would enjoy running.   I did not expect the support from individuals looking to donate.  We had $600 in donations! Inspiring people to add movement to their day was also a great silver lining. I spoke with a mother whom was traveling to visit her son in college. She said it occurred to her she never would have packed her walking shoes without this event.  She explained that because of the fun run, she was looking forward to a nice walk around campus with her son. She was grateful this event was planned because it allowed them to spend time together, doing something healthy.

We had multiple individuals participate in this event as their first 5K.  We had a young lady run in San Francisco, CA despite being states away from our facility.  We had a grandmother walk her first 5K and decided to push through without stopping despite being tired.  We had a former post-surgical patient complete her walk at home through the forest, and we had a group of ladies walk together during this event.  These examples go on.

Overall, we are humbled by the support, donations and participation.  We were able to raise over $2000 for the Opie Coxie Memorial Foundation. We found a way to come together and help people start moving. Most importantly this helped increase opportunities for children in our community.

We would not be able to make an event like this possible without our great staff.  We have an energized group of individuals who dedicate themselves to helping others.  We had thoughtful discussion on creating engagement, marketing ideas and T-shirt planning. I am thankful to work with such great people.  I would also like to thank my wife for the hours of dedication to personally thank each individual on social media for signing up for the event, but also being my support with any areas she could help.  This was a group effort and it shows!

Thank you to all the participants, donors and overall our staff. To all whom supported this event… you demonstrated our children matter.  With the joy we had with this event, the support of people in our community and the inspiration this created… We can see why giving is better than receiving. The American spirit is shining bright!
